What People Find Here — In Their Own Words

We think the most honest picture of Bo Lin comes from the residents and families who experience it day to day. Here are some of the things they have shared with us.

What Residents Say

CW

Chan Wai-Yee

Resident, Kowloon City

"I was not sure at first about moving out of my flat in Kowloon City. My daughter kept bringing it up and I kept finding reasons to say no. I came for a look in April and ended up staying for lunch. Something about the dining room — people were actually talking to each other. I joined the Companion Circles shortly after, and the mahjong afternoons have become the part of my week I look forward to most."

Lam Kwok-Hung

Family member of resident

"My father has been on the full Residence Plan for about eight months. As a family, the biggest thing for us is that he is not just sitting in a room. He goes to the calligraphy sessions — he was always interested but never had the space to practise at home. I visit most Saturdays and the staff always recognise me. Small thing, but it tells you something about the place."

Yung Sau-Ping

Resident, Sham Shui Po

"I have lived in Sham Shui Po my whole life, so moving here did not feel like a change of neighbourhood, more like moving a few streets over. The Cantonese opera sessions are something I would not have found anywhere else in a retirement setting. Ka-Ho knows the repertoire properly. It is not background music — we actually talk about the pieces."

Ho Man-Ling

Family member of resident

"My mother-in-law moved here after we realised that being at home alone through the week was not working for her. She is not someone who opens up easily, and we were worried about how she would settle. The Companion Circles were gentle enough that she found it manageable. After about six weeks she was the one reminding us about visiting hours because she had things she wanted to do."

Tang Fook-Cheung

Resident, Mong Kok

"I have been here nearly two years now, on the Residence Plan. The dining is good — not restaurant food, but well cooked and there is always enough. What I value most is the garden. In the mornings I take a walk through it before breakfast. In Mong Kok where I used to live there was nowhere quiet to do that. It is a small thing but it adds up over time."

Ng Bik-Kwan

Cultural Studio member

"I joined the Cultural Studio on its own, not the full residence. I still live in my flat with my son. The craft afternoons on Thursdays are the highlight of my week. I tried watercolour for the first time at 73 and apparently I have some talent for it, which is quite a surprise. The group is small and nobody makes anyone feel like a beginner."

Longer Journeys

Sometimes a short review cannot capture the full picture. Here are three accounts shared with us in more detail.

The Challenge

Mrs Cheung, 78, had been living alone in Sham Shui Po after her husband passed. Her daughter, working long hours in Central, was unable to visit more than once a week. Mrs Cheung became increasingly reluctant to leave the flat and had stopped cooking properly for herself.

What Helped

After a trial visit in January 2025, Mrs Cheung joined the Companion Circles. She found the mahjong sessions familiar and easy — she had played in this neighbourhood for thirty years. Over the following months she moved to the full Residence Plan. The regular mealtimes and familiar company helped reestablish a daily routine.

The Outcome

Four months in, Mrs Cheung's daughter describes the change as significant. Her mother is eating regularly, has formed several close friendships at Bo Lin, and now looks forward to her daughter's visits rather than depending on them as her only social contact. The daughter has also noted that she feels less anxious during the working week.

The Challenge

Mr Wong, 82, had retired from a long career as a calligrapher and was finding life in a small flat in Yau Ma Tei difficult. He had limited mobility and found the city increasingly hard to navigate. His son was looking for somewhere that could accommodate his interest in arts without being clinical or structured.

What Helped

Mr Wong joined the Cultural Studio programme and moved to the Residence Plan in March 2025. The calligraphy sessions gave him not only a practical space to work but also something he had been missing since retirement — an audience. He has since started informally guiding other residents who are new to the art form.

The Outcome

His son describes Mr Wong as more engaged and purposeful than he has been in several years. He attends the studio three times a week and has become an informal presence other residents gravitate toward. The garden walks have also helped his mobility more than expected.

The accounts on this page give one kind of picture. A visit gives you the other kind — the one that comes from sitting in the dining room and spending an hour here. We are glad to welcome you.
